FOR THE FIRST TIME in more than two hundred years, there’s a new blue on the block. Back in 2009, while attempting to create materials for use in electronics, a chemistry student from Oregon State University accidentally discovered this new inorganic hue, YInMn Blue. On the spectrum between cobalt and ultramarine, its name comes from the compounds used to make it: indium, manganese, yttrium, and oxygen. The Environmental Protection Agency approved the shade for consumers in 2020. Now it can be purchased through Golden acrylic paints for your own blue period.
