Clever Exchange

A collection of artworks that look nothing alike can have everything in common. At least, that’s a central theme of an exhibition coming to Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center in September.

A COLLECTION OF ARTWORKS that look nothing alike can have everything in common. At least, that’s a central theme of an exhibition coming to Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center in September. Clever, Quick, Magnetic: The Art of Witty Banter raises the question: Can a work of art possess something akin to a personality?

Curated by artist David Salle, pictured here, whose work is featured alongside that of more than a dozen other artists, the exhibition explores how paintings can feel connected despite appearing visually distinct. It invites viewers to consider whether art can seem alive and the relationships between intention and style, and offers a new way to look at these works through consideration of how they may share underlying characteristics beneath the surface.

Clever, Quick, Magnetic: The Art of Witty Banter will be on view September 3, 2026, through January 11, 2027, at Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center in Oklahoma City.
