Bigger in Texas

Image: An abstract portrait of a white woman with her head tilted back. Expressive and visible strokes of blue and red swipe over her features. The background is a coral red and paint drips are visible along the bottom of the frame.

AFTER DEBUTING AT the National Portrait Gallery in London, England, earlier this year, this first major museum show on Jenny Saville arrives at the Modern in Fort Worth, Texas. Often working at a colossal scale and unflinching in her portrayals of the human body—its candid desires, fleshy beauty, and visceral pain—the English painter has, since the early 1990s, built a reputation as a contemporary master of figurative painting. This exceptional gathering of pieces reveals how, with broad brushstrokes and compositions that challenge expectations for female nudes, Saville is still pushing painting to its limits.
