IN 2015, HIS HOLINESS the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu met in Dharamsala, India, for five days to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s eightieth birthday. The result was The Book of Joy (Penguin Random House, 2016), a best-selling book in which the two global religious leaders identified their Eight Pillars of Joy, the foundation for lasting happiness. Inspired, we used their collection to form our own Eight Pillars of Joy as the organizing principle for this, our Joy issue of ArtDesk.
